LARGE prep to Year 12 schools are dominating the Gold Coast NAPLAN results, a five-year analysis of the national literacy and numeracy tests has found.
From 2015 to 2019, A B Paterson College in Arundel had topped the Year 5 annual results, scoring an average of 2694.4 for the period.
Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the national test in May. The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.
SCHOOL SUSPENSIONS BOOMING ON THE GOLD COAST: FULL LIST
AB Paterson College principal Brian Grimes said he believed a consistent teaching approach from junior to senior school was behind the state-topping success.
“While these results demonstrate the success of our pedagogy, such results do not define the character of a school, or the educational benefits of a school’s culture,” Mr Grimes said.
Somerset College in Mudgeeraba had the second highest results for Year 5s on the Gold Coast, posting a yearly average of 2679.6 between 2015-2019.
The third-best performing Year 5 class was at Beechmont State School with 2670.4.
Somerset College was the top performing Year 9 school on the Coast, with an average score of 3157.4.
It was followed by Emmanuel College in Carrara (3095) and All Saints Anglican School in Merrimac (3082.8).
The figures were compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
An average score between 2015-2019 for each year was combined and the yearly average found.
St Hilda’s, Emmanuel College, Kings Christian College and All Saints all featured among the top 10 for both Year 5 and Year 9.
St Hilda’s junior school head Amanda Shuttlewood said a focus on building blocks and not teaching to a test was the secret behind St Hilda’s rankings.
“NAPLAN is useful to give a snapshot of the one test on the one day across the nation, but it isn’t everything,” Ms Shuttlewood said.
“The focus is on no surprises in the learning, a direct approach first then moving on to practising skills and applying them.”
