School airconditioning promises: The list of Gold Coast classrooms getting cooler

At least 60 Gold Coast schools will have air-conditioning installed across 1265 class rooms, libraries and teaching areas within the next two years. SEE THE FULL LIST

AT least 60 Gold Coast schools will get air-conditioning within the next two years across 1265 class rooms, libraries and teaching areas.

The Bulletin can reveal the breakdown for the Coast after the Palaszczuk Government today announced its $477 million Cooler Cleaner Schools Program.

Many of the schools are in the fast growing north of the city, from Pacific Pines to Coomera and Pimpama, where temperatures soar during the summer much higher than on the Coastal strip.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the policy would ensure all remaining Queensland schools outside the Cooler Schools Zone would now be air-conditioned.

“I’m absolutely delighted to announce that on top of the 301 schools we announced late last year, all Queensland school classrooms, libraries and staff rooms will be air-conditioned by June 2022,” she said.

“Importantly, this funding also covers the ongoing maintenance and replacement of units. Our program will also see an expansion of the ACES program to account for the extra energy consumption which will come from all the new air-conditioning units being installed.”

Labor believes it has trumped the LNP which had air-conditioning of schools as a key policy in the lead-up to the October 31 state election.

“Our announcement today proves we are getting on with the job and rolling-out air-conditioning in schools in a fiscally-responsible manner. In contrast, under the LNP’s policy, these schools might not see any air-conditioning until 2028 — we’re getting it done within two years,” the Premier said.

Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon said the announcement would be welcomed by all Coast schools, including five campuses in her electorate.

“This is a great outcome for students and teachers in my local schools who will be over the moon with this news,” Ms Scanlon said.

“We started a petition on this last year. It will be a massive benefit for Coast schools. I’ve been working with my local schools to campaign for air-conditioning and I know just how much this will mean to them — especially Nerang High which has over 50 learning spaces to be air-conditioned.

“Our fabulous P&Cs and broader school communities have worked tirelessly over the years to fundraise for air-conditioning and now this government funding will allow our schools to build on this great work. I’m sure there will be lots of pleased parents knowing that P&Cs are no longer footing the bill.

“The (cost of running) air-conditioining will be offset by energy efficiency measures and solar panels.”

Education Minister Grace Grace estimates 1249 Queensland state schools will benefit from this program.

“This funding will also include all new schools and new buildings,” Ms Grace said.

  • Key measures of the $477 million Cooler, Cleaner Schools program include:
  • An additional 644 schools to be air-conditioned by mid-2022 (including 301 already announced)
  • 1000 jobs installing, repairing and maintaining school air-conditioning
  • 80,000 school rooftop solar panels to meet running costs (in addition to our $97 million ACES Program already announced)

Schools and classrooms which already have air-conditioning will not have to pay to have them serviced or replaced in the future
