Dance coach Sonja Yvonne Middelbosch pleads guilty to supplying dangerous drug to minor, others

A South East Queensland dance teacher who has coached some of Australia’s leading dancers has pleaded guilty to supplying a “minute” amount of cocaine to a minor and others.

A highly regarded dance coach has pleaded guilty to supplying a “minute” amount of cocaine to a minor and others.

Sonja Yvonne Middelbosch on Wednesday in Brisbane’s Supreme Court pleaded guilty to five counts of supplying a dangerous drug. Two of those counts carried a circumstance of aggravation in that she supplied a drug, namely cocaine, to a minor.

She pleaded not guilty to one count of supplying cocaine to a minor.

Her lawyer, well-known legal eagle, Michael McMillan said the amounts of cocaine supplied were “minute”. The same went for the amount she allegedly supplied, he said.

“I’ve written a fairly detailed submission to (the DPP) it’s hopeful that the submission be accepted and there’s no penalty at sentence,” Mr McMillan said in court.

“They’re all minute quantities.”

Sonja Yvonne Middelbosch fronted the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Middelbosch is a former coach at LAUNCH Performing Arts Centre on the Gold Coast where she was described as “highly regarded in the Australian dance industry as the ultimate strength and conditioning technician”.

“She coaches some of the country’s leading dancers, who have gone on to work for or study with prestigious international companies including Basel Theatre Ballet – Switzerland, Rambert School – London, Martha Graham – New York, Australian Ballet School, Alvin Ailey – New York, Moulin Rouge – Paris, Zurich Ballet School – Zurich, London Ballet Company – London and many more,” LAUNCH’s website says.

On Facebook Middelbosch lists herself as the owner-operator of Gold Coast Dance and Development Centre with records confirming she is the business name holder.

Her case is back before the courts on May 15 for review. She remains on bail.
