A meth-addicted Gold Coast mother-of-two who crashed into a service station in a bid to flee cops, narrowly missing customers fuelling up at the bowser, has been castigated for her appalling driving record.

Samantha Lee Olson, 30, who now lives at Gladstone’s Barney Point, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where she pleaded guilty to disqualified driving and driving without due care and attention.

A further charge of failing to comply with a requirement to stop a private vehicle was discontinued by the prosecution.

The court heard the offending occurred in the vicinity of Dreamworld Parkway at Coomera at about 6.10pm on November 25 last year.

An off-duty police officer contacted Coomera Police Station to say he was driving behind a motorcycle with no plates and its manner of driving was of concern.

A police vehicle caught up with Olson as she reversed her motorcycle into a carpark at the 7-Eleven opposite Coomera State School.

Police prosecutor Rodney Keyte told the court that officers attempted to park Olson in, but she took off, narrowly missing the front of the police vehicle, before she lost control as she wobbled and wove in the vicinity of the bowsers, where motorists were attempting to fuel up.

Mr Keyte said Olson then crashed into the service station’s bait freezer, at which point she put her hands up in submission and was arrested.

Checks revealed her licence was disqualified and, even if it weren’t, she was not licensed to ride the particular class of motorcycle she was on.

Mr Keyte told the court Olson described to arresting officers her actions as a “kneejerk reaction” borne of her chequered history with law enforcement.

The court heard Olson had an eight-page Queensland criminal history and four-page traffic history, and was about 10 months into a court-ordered licence disqualification when the current offences occurred.

Defence lawyer Jarrod Bell said his client, who was currently working as an apprentice diesel mechanic, had a longstanding methamphetamine addiction and had a prejudicial upbringing, with both her parents being heroin addicts.

“She’s addressing as best she can her drug issues,” Mr Bell said, citing Olson’s move to Gladstone, in a bid to distance herself from drug-using associates, as one of the steps she had taken.

Magistrate Veena Goverdhan told Olson her behaviour was “appalling” and she needed to “grow up”.

She fined Olson $1369 and disqualified her from driving for two-and-a-half years, which will have to be served cumulative to her existing disqualification.

Convictions were recorded.
