SOME Queensland electorates could face an entirely postal vote as COVID-19 requirements prove a challenge to the upcoming state election.
A “statement of principles” announced yesterday by Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath revealed there will be more pre-poll locations, longer pre-poll hours and more pre-poll voting days in the lead up to voting day.
The new principles also mean in the case of a localised outbreak the Electoral Commission of Queensland could deliver a total postal vote in some electorates.
“It means Queensland will have an election period, not just an election day,” Ms D’Ath said.
“After the fantastic work that we have done together as a community, Queenslanders deserve nothing less.
“We will all ensure that ECQ has the capacity to accept telephone votes from vulnerable voters.
“While Queensland has smashed the curve on COVID-19, we need to be vigilant and prepared for any eventuality.”
It comes after local government elections earlier this year resulted in no new COVID-19 cases linked to polling booths or campaigners.
