Two cars parked at Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club have been inundated as cyclonic swell batters the southern Queensland coastline.
A video posted to social media showed powerful waves wash over the beachfront carpark, wiping out two cars left there.
The user claimed the cars belonged to “workers of the city.”
A Gold Coast City Council spokeswoman confirmed one of the cars was a council car.
“The City beach maintenance vehicle was picking up debris on the beach and removing fencing from the nearby Currumbin seawall in preparation for TC Alfred when it was briefly caught in a tidal surge,” she said.
“The vehicle was quickly driven off the beach without incident.”
In the video, one of the cars spins almost 180 degrees as it is hit by the whitewash.
Another video captured the drama from another angle, showing a person rushing to the silver car just before it spins.
A second video posted slightly later shows the person quickly getting in the car and managing to drive it out of the carpark.
A spokeswoman for the surf club said the silver car belonged to an employee of the surf club, and they were thankfully able to drive out safely.
She said the club was open on Wednesday morning and would be for as long as it was safe.
Less than a day before, another ute was caught in the swell after they drove onto the beach at Currumbin, prompting surf club president John Brennan to say: “you can’t help stupidity.”
