THE Gold Coast has been waiting more than 20 years since the Coomera Town Centre was first proposed. Now its developers say they know exactly when it will now open.

THE Gold Coast has been waiting more than 20 years since the Coomera Town Centre was first proposed but the wait is almost over.

Developer Westfield says the $470 million first stage of the shopping centre is on track to welcome customers in time for Christmas.

Construction continues on the mega shopping centre, with workers up against the clock to finish the project in time.

After nearly a year of construction workers have poured 90 per cent of concrete slabs, which required enough concrete to fill 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Centre manager Fiona Papworth said work remained on track despite recent wet weather.

“We are getting to the pointy end now and we are ready to open up later this year,” she said.

“The construction is really coming along and we are on track for late 2018 and Santa will be here so we will be ready.

“We are hoping this becomes an entertainment hub and we want this to be a unique offering.”

The 59,000-square metre development will feature 140 specialty stores including Woolworths, Coles, Kmart, Target and Event Cinemas

Roof sheeting on the cinema building is now complete, with the cavernous rooms which will house its giant-sized V-Max theatre already starting to resemble a movie house.

On the ground level the areas which will house Kmart, Woolworth and Target are taking shape with internal services and walls.

Among its features will be a “bright alfresco dining precinct”, which will be open alongside a fashion retail area.

Once operational the centre will have created 7500 jobs.

“What will really appeal to this local community, especially with the new residential developments coming into the suburb, will be out outdoor areas,” Ms Papworth said.

“There is a real outdoor focus and the external dining precinct and we hope it will appeal to the majority of the community.

“It will be a one destination, one lifestyle place for everyone to enjoy.”

Following the completion of the centre it is expected that Foxwell Road will be upgraded to cope with the extra traffic coming into the area.

Funding the road’s upgrade was a condition put on the development when the council approval the project.
