MG is making a charge for the electric vehicle market with its Gold Coast dealership unveiling the marque’s ZS EV Essence model at its grand opening on Saturday.
Pickering Luxury Garage director Peter Lynton said the model, priced from $43,990 drive-away, was priced at the affordable end of the electric market.
“The phones have been ringing off the hook with people asking when it will be in stock,” Mr Lynton said. “People want to get into an EV and not spend $60,000 or $80,000.
“We are well cheaper than our nearest competitor.”

Pickering Luxury Garage, run by Maurie Pickering and Mr Lynton, relocated from Spendelove Ave in Southport to Bailey Cres at the start of the month.
It sells MG, Haval and GWM as well as second-hand luxury cars such as Mercedes Benz and Ferrari.
The move to a new location was prompted by the business outgrowing its former premises.
Mr Lynton said the Bailey Cres site offered 6000sq m of space under roof with separate showrooms for the different brands.
There was also a workshop and detailing garage.
“What the move has done is allowed us to have designated charging bays for the electric vehicles,” Mr Lynton said.
He said April was the most difficult month for car retailers after the coronavirus pandemic hit the industry, but both May and June produced strong sales.
“We are continuing to grow and showing good sales numbers,” he said.
“It comes back to the customer realising the value on offer.”
He said the EV had a positive response when it was released to the UK market recently.
Demonstrator models will be on display this Saturday for prospective buyers to inspect.
Essence features included satellite navigation, three driving modes, a full electric liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery and an eight-year 160,000km warranty for the battery.
The MG relocation followed Tesla securing a new showroom and service centre on Nerang St for its electric vehicles starting from $73,900.
