OPERATORS of a $6.5 million hi-tech sports bar and brewery coming to one of the city’s best-known street corners say it will bring record crowds back to a resurgent Surfers Paradise.

Signature Hospitality Group aim to swing the doors open by summer next year on the site of the former Hard Rock Cafe and tip crowds to rival their Sydney Darling Harbour venue.

The Gold Coast micro brewery, sports bar and dining spot - going into the Paradise Centre on the corner of Cavill Ave and Surfers Paradise Blvd - will be called Sporting Globe x 4 Pines Brew Pub. It will cater to 900 patrons.

Its bar alone is larger than an average studio apartment and 100 new hospitality jobs will be created.

Signature Hospitality Group CEO James Sinclair said: “Over $1 million of the revamp budget will go toward audio visual features alone, making it the city’s “home of live sport”.”

The former Hard Rock site was “iconic” and an “investment attractive” Surfers Paradise was bouncing back after the pandemic – with tourists “flocking back”, he said.

“We expect to see larger crowds than our Darling Harbour venue, so it gives you an idea of what’s in store for the Gold Coast.”

4 Pines CEO Todd Atkinson said the brewery portion of the venue would have 14 vessels capable of “pumping out 100,000 pints a year”.

He said 4 Pines “always has their eyes on potential sites, but the home of the former Hard Rock cafe was “too good to be true”.

EARLIER: THE Gold Coast’s best-known street corner will be transformed into a hi-tech sports bar in a $6.5m redevelopment.

The former home of the Hard Rock Cafe in the Paradise Centre on the corner of Cavill Ave and Surfers Paradise Boulevard will be revamped by Signature Hospitality Group as the Sporting Globe x 4 Pines Brew Pub, a micro brewery and dining venue which will have room for up to 900 patrons.

It is expected to open to patrons next summer after a fit-out, which will include more than $1m worth of televisions and audiovisual equipment.

Signature Hospitality Group CEO James Sinclair said the venue, the company’s second collaboration with 4 Pines Brewing Company, would have the Gold Coast’s
largest island bar.

“The location is iconic and, inspired by its rich history we wanted to deliver an experience with a state-of-the-art fit-out,” he said.

“We had been searching for the right location for a number of years and this street corner is just perfect for that.

“Following the $40m redevelopment of the Paradise Centre’s beach end, this will be the final piece, the jewel in the crown so to speak.”

The company also owns the TGI Friday’s chain restaurant which opened as part of that upgrade in mid-2022.

Among the new venues features are:

* 70 high-definition screens, including touchscreen televisions in each booth,

* A microbrewery with parts coming in from overseas.

*A giant nine-screen video wall.

*More than 80 beers on tap.

The corner of Cavill Ave and Surfers Paradise Boulevard has long been a popular location.

Adam McKean, the head of retail for Paradise Centre owner Challenger, said he was pleased with the deal.

“This strongly positions Paradise Centre as the Gold Coast’s number one destination for dining, retail and entertainment,” he said.

The Hard Rock Cafe closed its doors suddenly last year after a rental dispute between the restaurant’s international arm and management of the Paradise Centre shopping complex came to a head, leaving more than 30 people out of work.

It had been open since March 1996.

Its fittings were removed in recent months while the giant 17m guitar was taken down last week.

Mystery surrounds its future and whether it will reopen in a different space.

Before that, it was famously the location of the original Surfers Paradise Hotel which was opened by Jim Cavill in the 1920s.

It was demolished in the 1980s by developer Eddie Kornhauser to make way for the Paradise Centre.
