THE redevelopment of the Old Burleigh Theatre is being fast-tracked to capitalise on the hot property market.
Sydney-based developer Wei Wang says he will move quickly to build De-Luxe, his proposed 13-storey “ultra luxury” residential tower despite community objections to the project.
The Weiya Holdings boss, speaking for the first time since the controversial development was given the green light in May, said its 30 luxury units would go on sale within weeks before demolition works began on the existing building.

“We are extremely excited to have received the green light from council for the redevelopment of the Old Burleigh Theatre and are looking forward to bringing this innovative project to Burleigh Heads very soon,” he said.
“It has been a long road to get here but we are extremely grateful for the feedback from community that allowed us to devise a truly unique design that maintains that connection to the community while providing sought-after residences on one of the Gold Coast’s most coveted beachfronts.

“We listened carefully to what the community wanted from the redevelopment and used those recommendations to guide the design we submitted to council, which will see the iconic facade of the Old Burleigh Theatre retained in the transformative redevelopment.”
Weiya has appointed an in-house sales and marketing team who will oversee sales in the new De-Luxe tower, which is named after the old cinema that was once housed in the arcade.
It is the latest in a $5 billion wave of developments or infrastructure either under construction or in the pipeline for Burleigh.
GOLD COAST LIGHT RAIL: THE TRUE STORY OF OUR TRAMS
Work began this week on the new $450 million twin-tower Mondrian Hotel on The Esplanade, while Goodwin Terrace is home to the new Norfolk and Luna towers.
Weiya bought the old theatre site which neighbours the Goodwin Terrance towers for $18.5 million.
In August, 2019, Weiya announced plans for a 14-storey luxury apartment tower with a new arcade at its base.
The design was revamped after community outrage that the 1950s-era facade would be lost.
The Queensland Heritage Council did not accept a council application for the arcade to be heritage listed on the basis that it had already been heavily redeveloped several times, most recently in 1977. The heritage council also argued that nothing remained from the original 1930s building.
The new tower will feature a street-front retail arcade that retains the original “bookend” facade and will include a cafe and retail tenancies.
A community campaign pitching another design failed to gain support from council.
The corner site will have direct frontage to the Gold Coast Highway next to the planned light rail station.
