THE first of $2 billion worth of new supertower developments is set to be built much sooner than anyone expected.

The 53-storey tower will include both a 4.5 star hotel as well as integrated resort residential apartments.

It will be followed by other towers of 65, 74 and 54 storeys and comprise a further 1794 apartments and 518 rooms at the site.

Star Entertainment Group Chairman, John O’Neill, speaking at last night’s grand opening of The Darling tower, said construction was imminent.

“There can be no complacency because Queensland needs more rooms, needs more transport options and a broader hospitality market,” he said.

It will feature more than 400 one and two-bedroom residential units across the upper 33 levels, with a 300 room hotel on its lower 13 levels.

The podium will have resort facilities, retail outlets and new eateries.

The tower is expected to open in 2021.

Mr O’Neill also took aim at tourism operators who he said were complacent.

“The forecast show the number of international visitors will increase by 75 per cent to 15 million by 2027 so we in the industry cannot be complacent,” he said.

“One of the big problems with Australian tourism is (the attitude to) blame somebody, blame the government and finger point and don’t take responsibly for your own future.

“That is a big message which Star Entertainment has embedded.

“We take responsibility for what we do and the government and other agencies will play their role.”

It comes as the Gold Coast City Council was today told the economic commitment by Star Entertainment to the casino “island” at Broadbeach could top $2 billion.

Mayor Tom Tate at full council today, as the councillors passed a master plan for The Star; described it as a world class development.

“This master plan will put us on the map again,” he told councillors.

Broadbeach based councillor Paul Taylor spoke glowingly of the proposed four-tower project having attended a function with hotel managers the night before.

Cr Taylor said the master plan showed the respect the company held for the Gold Coast as a tourist destination.

“I understand that the total commitment to the island at the end could be $2 billion. It’s a lot of money in anyone’s language,” he said.

“They are one company that doesn’t say they are going to do it, they do it,” he added.
