Elderly driver killed and passenger hurt in late-morning crash

An elderly driver has been killed, and a woman injured, following a crash in the New South Wales Hunter Region.
It happened about 11.30am Sunday along the Pacific Hwy at Ferodale, Port Stephens, about a kilometre north of Medowie Rd.
A 70-year-old man driving an SUV lost control of his car, left the road, and hit a tree.
He died from his injuries at the scene.
A 70-year-old woman, who was his passenger, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition with suspected spinal injuries.
Police attended and established a crime scene as they investigate the cause of the crash, and will also prepare a report for the coroner.
