An ex-Queensland Reds player who also played reserve grade for the North Queensland Cowboys has been busted drink driving for the third time in five years.

Adam William Lane, 43, was charged with drink driving after he was pulled over on Ashmore Rd in Bundall around 6.30pm on September 20.

In a positive roadside test he had a subsequent breath analysis returning a result of 0.097 - almost twice the legal limit.

At Southport Magistrates Court on October 10, a police prosecutor told Magistrate Michelle Dooley it was Lane’s third drink-driving offence within five years. He was previously caught at 0.153 - more than three times the legal limit - and again at 0.131.

Lane pleaded guilty to the offence as his solicitor told the court he had experienced relationship difficulties prior to each of his three drink-driving busts.

“He knows he is in a predicament given he has two other offences in the last five years,” the solicitor told the court.

“He is in a difficult position with respect to his employment and his personal situation.”

The court heard Lane had attended Brisbane Grammar School, attained a Bachelor of Business and Administration from the University of Queensland, and an MBA.

He previously represented Queensland and Australia in rugby union at the Junior World Cup, played reserve grade rugby league for the North Queensland Cowboys, and played for the Queensland Reds for five years as well as in the rugby league Queensland Cup.

“He is held in significant regard,” the solicitor told the court.

“He is engaged with people on the cusp of retirement with self-managed super funds, he travels all over Australia particularly between North Queensland and central NSW.”

The court heard Lane had not had anything to eat all day before meeting his partner at the Lone Star Tavern to discuss this relationship, where they shared a bottle of wine.

Ms Dooley convicted Lane of the offence and fined him $850 with a seven-month driving disqualification.
