Man out cold after brawl in Surfers Paradise

An ugly street fight between patrons and security outside a popular Gold Coast nightspot left one man unconscious, with a visiting family calling it “horrific” to see.

Security guards at the rooftop Cali Beach Club ended up in an altercation outside on Surfers Paradise Boulevard near the Elkhorn Avenue corner with two patrons. It left one patron’s face covered in blood and the other knocked out cold.

In scenes called “horrific” by a witness, they described security staff and the two patrons fighting on the street in visitor magnet Surfers Paradise. The security team eventually restrained the two men - with one unconscious. Security were holding them on the ground in a footpath plantation garden.

Half a dozen police and ambulance paramedics arrived soon after.

Police restrained the man whose face was covered in blood on arrival, as he shouted in distress “I was just trying to save my mate”.

“I’m a f--king law abiding citizen. I pay my taxes. I pay your f--king wages. Oi Oi - my friend is f--king suffering right now,” he continued.

“I haven’t done s---. I’ve done nothing wrong.”

His “mate” lay unconscious beside him under a curbside palm tree.

Cali Beach Club manager Nathan Claridge said he understood it started when the two patrons had had some sort of altercation with an unknown 18-year-old male inside the Cali lift. His security then went outside the venue to restrain them before police arrived.

“We called our guards at the front door and they have come around and these two guys are hoo-haahing and being macho men - and our guys said ‘Listen you are staying here because this (young) guy is pressing charges,” he claims.

“And they were pretty much like ‘Go f--- yourselves, we’re not having a bar of that, we’re going’. And then they started kicking off and our guards went ‘We’ll have to put you down’ and when they tried putting them down they’ve grabbed one of the guards, ripped his shirt, socked him and then - well - my guards had to use force a little bit,” he claimed.

Police put the man whose face was covered in blood in the back of the police wagon and paramedics stretchered the unconscious man into an ambulance.

Bystanders including a visiting couple with young children - who had been walking back to their accommodation after dinner - said it was extremely violent and they tried to implore all sides to stop.

“I don’t know what happened inside,” one witness said, but added the security team “absolutely cleaned them up”.

“(The guy in the police wagon) was just trying to protect his mate - that’s why he was blowing up.”
