Randall Bickley jailed for attempted rape of a woman in Whyalla

“Whether you like it or not I am going to f*** you,” is what a struggling woman was told by her attacker, before the fast food worker punched her in the face.

What happens after a sexual assault?

An attempted rapist told a woman to “just keep still” while he committed his sickening attack, before punching her in the face when she tried to struggle.

Randall John Ross Bickley, 21, was persistent during his violent assault, even telling the victim he thought it was turning her on.

The Adelaide District Court on Friday heard Bickley and the victim were associates when he invited her to his house on April 19, 2020.

Bickley, who appeared drunk, told the victim he liked her and tried to kiss her on the lips.

“She pushed you away and told you that she was not interested,” Judge Timothy Heffernan said during sentencing.

Bickley then pushed the victim onto the bed and got on top of her, pinning her down.

He grabbed her hair and squeezed her breast.

Bickley pulled the victim’s pants down and threw her phone out of reach when she tried to grab it.

As the victim continued screaming for Bickley to get off, he told her “just keep still. Whether you like it or not I am going to f*** you”.

“She (the victim) managed to sit up, at which time you punched her with a closed fist to the right side of her face,” Judge Heffernan said.

“This made her feel dizzy and dazed. You continued to try to get her pants down.”

Bickley then moved the victim’s hands towards his penis and told her she wasn’t going home.

“You said that you thought ‘it was turning (her) on’,” Judge Heffernan said.

Bickley, of Whyalla Stuart, had previously pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rape.

The court heard Bickley’s offending had a profound effect on the victim.

“After the incident, she describes herself as an absolute mess and says that she has had many sleepless nights,” Judge Heffernan said.

“She does not know how to cope with the memory of what happened to her which has led to introversion and a loss of motivation to enjoy hobbies and the things that she likes.”

The court heard Bickley, who had worked at a fast-food outlet, started using methamphetamine after being introduced to it by a friend.

“You became heavily addicted to it which affected your decision-making and your behaviours,” Judge Heffernan said.

The court heard Bickley had penned an apology letter to the victim and had been abstaining from drugs.

Judge Heffernan said Bickley was only concerned with his own gratification during the offending.

“You were persistent in your assault even after (the victim) began crying and screaming for help,” he said.

“You restrained her against her will, not momentarily, but over a period of time and you touched her sexually.”

Judge Heffernan sentenced Bickley to two years and 11 months jail, with a non-parole period of 11 months.

“Your conduct was aggressive, sustained and devoid of any respect for her wishes or dignity as a person,” he said.

“It must have been a terrifying experience for your victim.”
