A man is being questioned over the fatal bashing of retired solicitor Peter McCarthy in Sydney’s eastern suburbs last month.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said the man was arrested on Wednesday morning.
“About 7.30am today homicide squad detectives arrested a 44-year-old man at a home at Summer Hill. He was taken to Burwood police station as enquiries continue,” she said.
Earlier this week,a woman was charged over Mr McCarthy’s death.
Police arrested Narelle Smith, a neighbour, at the same South Coogee unit block where retired solicitor Mr McCarthy, 77, was found dead.
He was allegedly beaten to death in a botched home invasion some time between December 16, when he was captured on CCTV at his favourite city bar, and December 20, when his body was found inside the Elphinstone Rd flat.
Homicide detectives returned to the unit block at 1pm on Monday to arrest Smith, 46.
She was taken to Maroubra Police Station where she was charged with murder and dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.
Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said the pair knew each other.
“There is very significant forensic and physical evidence to make this a strong and compelling case,” he said.
Det Supt Doherty said Mr McCarthy’s family had been notified of the breakthrough.
“It’s mixed emotions for them, they’ve just gone through Christmas without a father and a grandfather,” he said.
Meanwhile, a man is also being questioned over the case.
