Sydney’s underworld is a powder keg after a bikie gang kidnapped a brother in a powerful crime family believing they were behind the theft of a 400kg cocaine shipment.
It has caused a major problem for the bikie boss who ordered the kidnapping after it appears the Middle Eastern crime family had nothing to do with the drug rip off.
The man was grabbed from southwest Sydney on Friday night and released on Saturday night after tense negotiations between the two parties went on throughout the day.
Senior police sources have confirmed they have received intelligence about the drug theft but not the kidnapping.
“Not only has this boss pissed off a very serious crime family by the kidnapping, he has pissed off members of his own gang now,’’ one underworld source said.
“There are some members saying they don’t want to do any more jobs for the leader until things are sorted out between the two groups.’’
Another underworld source said there is suspicion all over southwest Sydney after the botched kidnapping as well as inside the bikie club itself.
“And they (the bikie gang) haven't got the coke back … it’s worth over a $100m and there are some pretty angry people,’’ he said. “One person said only senior guys inside the club, mainly based overseas, knew about the shipment so there is a lot of internal friction.
“This is not over. People get killed over this stuff.’’
Police from the NSW Criminal Gangs Squad, including Strike Force Raptor, have saturated the southwest recently after two gangland hits on high-profile crime figures. In August, former Comanchero Fares Abounader was shot dead outside his Panania home in what was believed to be an internal fight.
Last month, Mejid Hamzy, brother of jailed gang leader Bassam Hamzy, was gunned down outside his home in Condell Park.
