A man charged over a semiautomatic Glock pistol found in a major police crackdown on western Sydney’s underworld said he had no idea the firearm was under a couch cushion in his house.

Police searched 25-year-old Torek Ayoub’s Condell Park home about 7am on Tuesday, and allegedly found the gun along with 146g of cocaine, 40g of methamphetamine, 5g of cannabis and $29,000 cash.

Ayoub was charged with nine offences including drug supply and possessing an unauthorised firearm.

“My client says he knows nothing about those items,” Ayoub’s barrister Greg James QC told Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.

Mr James unsuccessfully argued Ayoub should get bail, saying many other people used the home.

“(It is) accessed by up to 10 people a day including members of his family, including his younger brother,” he said.

“The family money, which is found apparently in a box under the bed, which they’re attributing to him, does not suggest a case of overwhelming strength.”

Police raided Ayoub’s house as part of a massive crackdown on underworld activity following the murder of Mejid Hamzy on October 18.

There is no suggestion Ayoub had any link to the murder or the Hamzy family, rather that he was raided as police launched a broad investigation.

The court heard police arrived to serve Ayoub a Firearms Prohibition Order on Tuesday and began searching the home immediately.

Magistrate Glen Walsh denied Ayoub bail, saying it was possible he did obtain the gun, drugs and cash himself and that police had a strong case.

“There was found in the vicinity of the lounge, a bike helmet, gloves and a balaclava,” Mr Walsh said.

The case was adjourned to December 23.
