Couple charged over samurai sword death arrive at court

A former kindergarten teacher has spoken for the first time about the terrifying moment a stranger in a balaclava burst into her boyfriend’s flat wielding a gun and a set of knuckledusters.

Hannah Quinn, 26, was shown crying in a police record of interview as she told officers that the man threatened that other people would target their families if they didn’t hand over their money.

They were a few moments which would change their lives and leave aspiring rapper Jett McKee dying in a pool of blood in a suburban street.

Quinn and her boyfriend, actor Blake Davis, 31, have pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr McKee in August 2018.

He died after being hit in the head by Davis with one of his collection of Samurai swords. His injury has been described as cleaving what looked like a parting in his hair.

The couple has claimed they were acting in self defence.

Quinn told police in the record of interview, which has been played to the Supreme Court jury, that she had seen the man looking “dodgy” outside her boyfriend’s ground floor flat in Hereford Street, Forest Lodge.

The jury was been told that McKee had a gambling addiction and had used so much of the drug ice on that day it could have been a fatal dose.

“This guy came in and he had a balaclava. Me and Blake jumped up,” Quinn told police.

“This guy started yelling. He had a gun in his hand and yelling at us to give him all our valuables and he said he would shoot us.

“He was really intimidating. He said there were more people coming if we didn’t give him the money and different things.

“He said there were people who knew where our families were and they would hurt our families.”

She said he had the gun in one hand and put the knuckledusters on the other and hit her boyfriend, knocking him out.

He then grabbed her bag, which was still over her shoulder, and she was dragged into the street before he snatched the bag.

She chased him.

“I caught up with him and I tried to snatch my bag back,” she told police.

“He turned around and tried to punch me. I stepped back and he lost his footing and fell to the ground. I was frozen.”

She told police that was when David caught up with them.

“He hit the guy. I just saw the blood and ran and freaked out,” she said.

The jury has been told the couple hid in hotels before going to Newtown Police on August 13 when they were charge with murder.

“We thought there might be more people coming,” she said.

“We went to a hotel. We were freaking out and we didn’t know what to do.”

The trial before Justice Natalie Adams continues.
