A man was flung from his car and tried to flee on foot after a dramatic police pursuit across Sydney’s west ended in a multi-vehicle crash early Friday morning.
The 33-year-old, who was wanted on outstanding domestic violence-related warrants, suffered serious head injuries and is now fighting for life in hospital after being arrested near the crash site.
The incident began just after 5am when officers spotted a red Mazda hatchback parked on the Great Western Highway at Bowenfels, near Lithgow.
As police approached, the driver took off, sparking an hours-long chase across multiple suburbs.
Around 7am, the Mazda was seen again on Werriway St in South Littleton, where it allegedly rammed a police vehicle and drove directly at an officer. No injuries were reported.
The car continued towards the Bells Line of Road, prompting Chifley Highway Patrol officers to initiate a second pursuit, however, it was quickly called off due to the dangerous driving.
Another pursuit began near Faulconbridge but was also terminated due to public safety concerns.
NSW Police’s PolAir helicopter later tracked the vehicle to the Penrith area, where road spikes were deployed on Castlereagh and Cranebrook Roads.
The Mazda kept going before crashing into a Toyota SUV, a Sprinter van and a Hyundai on Castlereagh Rd.
The driver was thrown from the car during the crash and attempted to flee, but was arrested nearby and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital in critical condition.
The 35-year-old driver of the SUV sustained minor hand injuries, while the other drivers were uninjured.
A crime scene has been established and investigations are ongoing. Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
