Slain bikie Omar Zahed was beaten up as a youngster by his infamous older brother Tarek, resulting in him developing a penchant for violence and crime that ultimately ended with his murder.

The life and times of the Comanchero bikie who was gunned down at an Auburn gym in May can finally be detailed at length after The Daily Telegraph fought a non-publication order over his name and sought access to previously unpublished court papers about his criminal life.

Psychologist reports submitted during his sentencing for drugs charges in 2018 revealed Zahed suffered at the hands of his brother and their father when he was young – resulting in his history of violence.

“Zahed’s early childhood was visited by episodic physical violence from his father and older brother (Tarek),” the documents read.

“He has five siblings. Money was tight in the family as his father was a gambler.

“Zahed had a troubled family history and a degree of deprivation. One of six children, all (are) said to have criminal records.”

When Omar and Tarek were shot at outside BodyFit Gym on Parramatta Rd earlier this year, many quickly assumed the intended target was the well known older brother, then sergeant-at-arms of the Comanchero gang.

But the documents – revealed when Omar successfully appealed his original maximum sentence of 11 years in the Court of Criminal Appeal – detail how he also had a lengthy list of criminal associates.

“Lamentably, (Omar Zahed) has had more than a passing acquaintance with the criminal justice system,” a judgment from DCJ Ian McClintock found.

“His criminal record demonstrates previous convictions for serious offences and periods in custody dating from 1999.

“Zahed appears to associate himself with false friends who were engaged in various criminal enterprises.”

In fact Omar, was so heavily involved in the criminal milieu that when he was granted bail on drugs charges in 2014, he tried to flee NSW.

NSW Police arrived at Omar’s home while he was out on bail to serve him with a firearm prohibition order (FPO) just as he and a friend were pulling out of their driveway.

Police served him the order and asked if he wanted to be present while they searched his house.

Omar declined, knowing they would find drugs and AK-47 ammunition inside, and throw him back behind bars.

So instead he fled to Western Australia, only to be caught six weeks later and extradited back to NSW.

A judge took Omar’s criminal history into consideration when sentencing him for his role in the major drug syndicate being run out of Catherine Field, in Sydney’s west, on which he was a “consultant”.
