The horror hoard of rodents have hit Wellington Correctional Facility, about a 40-minute drive south east of Dubbo.

Up to 750 male and females live at the facility, which caters for minimum to maximum security inmates.

A Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said they were baiting and using sticking pads to catch the pests.

It is understood the situation is so bad, two correctional officers have been bitten by mice.

“We’re doing everything we can to support staff and inmates at Wellington Correctional Complex and mitigate the effects of the mouse plague,” the spokeswoman told The Daily Telegraph.

“The prison complex is using a combination of baiting and sticking pads to help address the problem and has increased cleaning on site.”

Wellington Correctional Centre Governor Mark Kennedy said only a change in weather could fix the problem.

“Realistically, it will take a massive change in the weather — a few hard frosts or some really good rain — to clean the problem up. Better than what we can do,” Mr Kennedy said.

“Our officers are doing a great job managing the significant challenges of their daily work under the additional pressure of the mouse plague. It can be a bit draining, but the country people out here are used to this kind of thing.

“Everyone‘s coping the best way they can. We’re keeping an eye on each other, getting around and making sure everyone’s OK.”
