Wild video footage has emerged of a police officer in a motorcycle helmet repeatedly striking a man with a baton during an arrest in Sydney’s west.
The footage, obtained by The Daily Telegraph, appears to show the helmeted NSW Police officer hitting the man with his baton multiple times before other officers arrive along Miller Rd in Chester Hill on Tuesday afternoon.
The man then falls to the ground in a house’s front yard and is handcuffed before being escorted to a police van.
“Stop using the bat, stop using the bat,” a man can be heard saying in the footage.
Police said officers had been patrolling in the area when a white Toyota HiLux allegedly did an illegal U-turn.
The officers pulled over the HiLux and drug tested the driver.
Police allege the 39-year-old returned a positive test for cocaine before he resisted arrest and struck the helmeted officer.
He then was injured during the struggle.
“The 39-year-old man suffered a laceration to the head and a suspected broken arm, he was taken to Bankstown Hospital for assessment where he remains under police guard,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
He was charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest. He was also subjected to a blood test and may face further charges, pending the results.
He was refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.
Police said senior officers reviewed footage captured by the helmeted officer’s body cam and decided he had acted in line.
“Traffic and Highway Patrol Command has conducted an initial review of the entire incident captured on the officer’s body-worn vision and have determined the officer’s tactical options were necessary for the arrest,” the NSW Police spokeswoman said.
