A young female police officer was knocked unconscious for a shocking 70 minutes after she and two other officers were brutally attacked while trying to help a man in Sydney’s west on Friday night.

Senior police have labelled the assault on the officers as “sickening” after they were all hospitalised and one of them forced to undergo testing for bloodborne illnesses after he was bitten by the man.

The horrific incident unfolded in Bidwill about 6.30pm, after police were called to Bunya Rd following reports a man was lying in the middle of the road.

Two female officers, aged 22 and 23, arrived at the scene and tried to speak with 19-year-old Khi Tremain however it’s alleged he quickly jumped up, kicked the 23-year-old in the stomach, then punched her in the head, causing her to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.

As she lay unresponsive on the ground, Tremain turned his attention to her partner, allegedly punching her in the face, before she deployed capsicum spray.

Mt Druitt Police Area Commander Detective Superintendent Darrin Batchelor said another patrol car arrived at the scene shortly after, and immediately became panicked when they saw their colleague lying unconscious on the ground.

“They didn’t know what had occurred, whether the female officer had been stabbed or shot,” he said.

“They immediately got out of the car and (made an arrest).”

The two female constables were rushed to hospital, with the 23-year-old unconscious for up to 70 minutes.

“She was unconscious the entire time at the scene and during the transport to Westmead Hospital,” Detective Superintendent Batchelor said.

“I’ve spoken to all the officers, they are sore and shaken and the events of last night are now starting to dawn on them, how serious it was, how much more serious it could have been.”

Tremain was arrested at the scene, and on the way to hospital allegedly bit a third officer, who is now in an agonising wait to check him for any blood borne diseases.

“It’s traumatic for him too,” he said.

Upon his release from hospital, Tremain was charged with three counts of assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and three counts of hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

Detective Superintendent Batchelor said all of the officers had since been released from hospital and were doing well - and that the relief in the station was “palpable”.

Acting NSW Police Commissioner Peter Thurtell described the attack as appalling, and condemned the alleged actions of the 19-year-old.

“This is a sickening attack and those officers were just doing their job,” he said.

“Incidents like these clearly demonstrate the bravery and courage of officers who are just doing their best to protect the community.

“Police officers put themselves on the frontline and in danger every single day, they deserve respect not violence.”

Acting Police Commissioner Tara Moriarty shared his sentiment, saying she was “sickened” by the attacks.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the unpredictable and often dangerous situations our police face every shift,” she said.

“Officers put themselves on the front line every single day and for that they should be commended, not attacked.

“No one deserves to be assaulted for simply doing their job, especially those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.”
