Man charged after grocery truck allegedly stolen in Bankstown and driven across Sydney in police pursuit

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a delivery driver, stealing a grocery truck, and leading police on a dramatic pursuit across Sydney and into the Blue Mountains.

A man has been charged and will face court over the alleged theft of a grocery truck and a dramatic police pursuit across Sydney and into the Blue Mountains on Wednesday morning.

Police were called to Olympic Parade in Bankstown shortly before 6am following reports a 23-year-old truck driver was assaulted and hit with a stun device by a man who then allegedly stole his vehicle.

The driver was initially taken to Bankstown Police Station, assessed by paramedics, and later transferred to Bankstown Hospital for further treatment.

Officers began investigating the incident and worked to locate the stolen truck.

Just before 9am, police spotted the truck on the Princes Highway at Rockdale and attempted to stop it. When the driver allegedly failed to pull over, a pursuit was initiated.

The chase continued into Wolli Creek, where the truck reportedly struck four parked cars but kept going.

Police terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns, with the truck last seen entering the M8 tunnel.

With the assistance of PolAir, police continued tracking the vehicle as it travelled westbound onto the M4 Motorway.

Officers successfully deployed road spikes on the Great Western Highway at Glenbrook, bringing the truck to a stop shortly after in Blaxland.

A 29-year-old man was taken to Springwood Police Station and later transported to Nepean Hospital to be checked for minor injuries sustained during the arrest. He was also subjected to a mandatory testing at the hospital.

Police subsequently searched the truck and seized a taser, which will undergo forensic examination.

Just after 11.30pm, the man was taken to Penrith Police Station after being released from hospital.

He was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, knowingly possess identity plate not on correct vehicle, and use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

He was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court today on Thursday.
