An elderly mother and son who were found dead in their Arncliffe home after not being heard from for more than a month have been identified.

Michael Rosenberg, in his 70s, and his mother Irene Rosenberg in her 90s were found by NSW Police about 2pm on Tuesday after officers were called to check on their welfare.

It is understood the pair are long term residents of the home on Knight St in Sydney’s south, but had not answered calls for some five weeks.

Mr Rosenberg had been living at the home and caring for his elderly mother, and is tragically suspected to have died first — before she subsequently passed away.

Police have launched an investigation into their deaths but sources said early indications were that there was no suspicious circumstances.

On Wednesday morning, a neighbour who requested not to be named said the discovery was “a bit eerie”.

The man said he and his partner had been renting next door to the mother and son “since January and we never saw her”.

He had seen Mr Rosenberg walking up and down the street’s steep hill, and said “it looked like he was making an effort to maintain his mobility”.

Neighbours Michael and Agnes often saw the man walking to the grocery store and post office.

“He was very mobile and capable when we saw him last,” Michael said.

The couple estimated they last saw Mr Rosenberg four to six weeks before the mother and son’s bodies were discovered.

“The fact that it had gone so long would indicate that there wasn’t a lot of social contact,” Michael said.

“Community nurses would go there but we haven’t seen them in a long time.”

The couple said they occasionally saw ambulances attend the property.

“We just had council pickup and normally he would have clippings in front of his house,” Agnes said.

“But the first week of July I noticed he didn’t have anything.”

Agnes said she was shocked to hear the news of the family’s deaths, as “we should be knowing our neighbours but we seem to have missed that”.

In a statement, a NSW Police spokesperson said the bodies of the man and woman “were located in different rooms in the house and are believed to have been at the location for a considerable amount of time”.

“A crime scene was established, and an investigation commenced.
