Dozens of schoolchildren looked on in shock as a high-speed police chase escalated, with officers drawing their guns after a driver crashed into multiple vehicles before his dramatic arrest on Tuesday afternoon.
Officers were patrolling Benham Ave in Wyoming shortly before 3.15pm when they spotted a silver Mitsubishi Outlander that had been reported stolen from Gosford earlier that day.
When the vehicle failed to comply with the stop order, a pursuit was initiated but was quickly called off due to safety concerns.
A short time later officers attempted to stop the vehicle again before re-engaging in the pursuit.
The vehicle entered Mann Street in Gosford, crashing into multiple vehicles, including two police cars.
It’s further alleged that the driver, a 22-year-old man, intentionally drove toward two officers on foot, forcing them to take evasive action, before finally coming to a stop after hitting a brick wall.
Shocking footage captures the moment the car speeds toward two officers with one of their guns drawn.
After ramming into the back of another vehicle, the driver attempts to flee but loses control, crashing into a wall.
The driver then abandons the vehicle and tries to escape on foot but is quickly apprehended by officers.
During the arrest, the driver allegedly resisted, causing minor injuries to a senior constable. The chaotic scene unfolded in front of dozens of schoolchildren.
The occupants of a vehicle involved in one of the collisions on Mann St, a woman and two young children, were treated for minor injuries by paramedics.
The 22-year-old man was taken to Gosford Police Station and also treated for minor injuries by paramedics.
Investigations led police to believe that he was the holder of a suspended learner driver’s licence and was also allegedly breaching bail conditions from an unrelated matter.
He was charged with seven offences including steal motor vehicle, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, drive motor vehicle while licence suspended, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty and breach of bail
The Gosford man has been refused bail to appear at Gosford Local Court later on Wednesday.
