A Sydney man allegedly pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State and was gathering recipes on homemade explosive devices.
The 24-year-old man was arrested at his home in Chester Hill on Friday morning after a seven month investigation by NSW and Australia Federal Police Counter Terrorism officers.
It is alleged the man’s online rhetoric around the Islamic State and extremism has escalated recently, forcing police to swoop.
“He has an extremist ideology and his rhetoric online was escalating,” AFP counter terrorism operations Commander Stephen Dametto said.
“We always put community safety first and that’s why we decided to go and arrest him.”
The man allegedly pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State in 2018 and has been associated with targets of past terrorism investigations.
When police carried out two search warrants at Chester Hill and Sefton, officers allegedly found recipes for homemade explosive devices.
However, police said the man had not collected any actual explosives.
The man, who lived at home with his family, has been charged with membership of a terrorist organisation.
He is due to appear in Parramatta Bail Court today.
