Alleged kidnap of Australian cricketer had 'all the makings of a true crime story'

Cricket legend Stuart MacGill has been charged with taking part in a $330,000 cocaine deal that police allege led to the spin bowler being kidnapped.

The famed Australian Test bowler will face Manly Local Court on October 26 charged with one count of taking part in the supply of a large commercial quantity of cocaine, a NSW Communities and Justice spokesman confirmed.

Police from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad arrested and charged the 52-year-old retired cricket star on Tuesday before he was released on bail.

Detectives from the squad will allege the 44 Test veteran facilitated a drug deal between two people where one agreed to sell 1kg of cocaine to the other for more than $330,000 in 2021.

Investigators will also allege MacGill had a $1000 cocaine debt owed to one of the men cleared as a benefit for facilitating the deal.

Police allege this resulted in MacGill being blamed and kidnapped outside his Cremorne apartment on April 14, 2021.

The cricketer told police he was forced into a car before being taken to a rural Western Sydney property where he was stripped naked and bashed inside a dilapidated shed.

MacGill told police the men threatened to cut his fingers off with boltcutters and repeatedly punched him in the head during the terrifying ordeal.

Six people were charged over the alleged kidnapping and drug deal in May 2021.

Police have stated publicly multiple times in the past that MacGill was an innocent victim who had unwittingly introduced the two men but had taken no part in the alleged drug deal.

The cricketer has since given a number of television interviews where he has denied taking part in cocaine supply.

But after police received new information, the nature of which cannot legally be revealed, they moved to charge MacGill.

The charge carries a potential maximum penalty of life in jail.
