Firefighters and police have responded to a string of suspicious car fires across western Sydney overnight that left three vehicles destroyed in separate locations.
The first blaze was reported shortly before 11.30pm on Sunday when an abandoned hybrid Toyota sedan caught fire outside a home on Chiswick Rd in Greenacre.
When crews arrived, they noticed the car’s fuel tank had ruptured.
“Firefighters successfully contained the burning fuel and prevented the fire’s spread,” Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement.
“Exposed to the extreme heat, the vehicle’s battery was at risk of entering ‘thermal runaway,’ a process in which an overheated cell can issue explosive, toxic gas before bursting into intense flames.
“Firefighters carefully monitored the battery for over an hour, ensuring it had cooled and stabilised.”
Police are now investigating whether the vehicle was deliberately set alight.
Just hours later, at 3am, emergency crews rushed to Swinborne Crescent in Wetherill Park, where a car parked outside a home was engulfed in flames.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire and no injuries were reported.
Police are working to determine the cause.
Minutes after that incident, a third car fire broke out on Reading Ave in Kings Langley. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which also left no reported injuries.
Police have launched investigations into all three fires, working to determine whether they are linked or the result of deliberate acts of arson.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
