Three prisoners have been taken to hospital, a prison officer injured and various weapons seized by police following a violent jailhouse brawl on Friday morning.
Five men were involved in a “physical altercation” about 10.45am in a shared area of Lithgow Correctional Centre, according to Corrective Services NSW.
Emergency services were called to the prison after reports of a 31-year-old inmate threatening others with a metal object.
Police claim he was then involved in a confrontation with two other inmates aged 30 and 23, before emergency services arrived.
The pair were transported to Nepean Hospital, while specialist paramedics treated the 31-year-old man at the scene before airlifting him to Liverpool Hospital.
All three were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Police seized a metal pole and a knife at the facility.
A Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said prison officers and specialist security officers intervened and broke up the altercation.
Two other inmates and an officer were “treated for minor injuries onsite”.
“The situation was quickly resolved and inmates were returned to cells, as is standard procedure following an event of this nature,” she said.
Police have established a crime scene and the incident is being investigated further.
