Shocking footage has emerged of a wild melee between police and a group of anti-maskers which allegedly left two officers injured outside a western Sydney shopping centre.
The footage shows a dispute erupting between a dozen police and a family after a woman, aged 20, was arrested outside a Seven Hills shopping centre at 4.20pm on Friday for allegedly failing to wear a mask while shopping.
The woman’s family clashes with police after she is cuffed, shouting hysterically, labelling the officers “pigs” and claiming “it’s not part of the law” to wear a mask despite health orders making masks mandatory indoors until July 9.
“All she did was try to buy food without a mask,” one of them said.
Tensions boil over minutes later when back-up police, who were not wearing masks, swoop on the group and arrest another woman, aged 37, sparking an all-out brawl.
Members of the group lunge at police and shout obscenities like “f*** off” before accusing them of pepper spraying a 12-year-old as police escorted her sister into the back of the wagon.
“I’ll sue you … You’re assaulting a 12-year-old,” the girl’s mother shouted.
A spokesperson for NSW Police confirmed pepper spray was deployed when the 37-year-old allegedly “became aggressive towards police,” however, denied it was directed to the 12-year-old.
“The younger woman then allegedly kicked a senior constable to the legs and a probationary constable to the abdomen,” they said.
Both women were taken to Blacktown Police Station where the younger woman was charged with not wearing a mask or complying with stay-at-home orders and two counts of assault officer in execution of duty.
She was refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Local Court on July 3 and was granted conditional bail, to reappear before Blacktown Local Court on July 12.
The 37-year-old was charged with resist officer in execution of duty and granted conditional bail to appear before Blacktown Local Court July 8.
