Prison love-triangle saga: Inmate tight-lipped on romance

A court has heard phone recordings of the jail inmate scorned by a prison guard in which he goes on an expletive-filled tirade against her.

Female prison stood down and charged over alleged relationship with inmate

A jealous inmate’s “maliciously motivated” evidence that his ex-prison guard girlfriend gave him oral sex in a storeroom has been ruled inadmissible by a magistrate.

It comes after an explosive phone call from Corey London, 21, to his mother was played to Burwood Local Court on Wednesday moments after he learned his ex-girlfriend, suspended officer Melissa Goodwin, 25, was dating aspiring rapper, Rebels Motorcycle Club associate and ex-con Caleb Valeri.

In the call to his mother, London, who is serving a six-year jail term for armed robbery, unleashes a hurl of abuse towards Goodwin, pledging he will “make her burn”.

“Oi mum, did you see the news? Lil’ f***king s**t she is. She was being serious with me...she goes and talks to this f**king lil’ bitch Rebel dog. She got with him on bail. She was being serious with me...I’m going to f***ing burn her,” the 21-year-old said on May 18, 2020.

Goodwin was suspended from her position as an officer at Silverwater’s Metropolitan Remand Centre for dating Rebels associate Valeri while he was on bail.

She was not charged for this, but she has since been charged with having a sexual relationship with a separate inmate, London.

The Ingleburn woman has pleaded guilty to having an “intimate” relationship with London and sent him a “boyfriend-girlfriend” handwritten love letter in January 2020.

But she denied it was sexual.

In the phone call played to court, London references an argument he had with Valeri in prison.

“I put it on him when I was there. He said ‘Why are you talking to her?’ I said, ‘It’s none of your business you f***ing gronk’,” he told his mother.

His mum tries to reassure him: “Well you were dating a f***ing screw...you might be able to use this to your advantage to get out early….she was probably seeing like 10 of you.”

London responded: “What do you mean? I was the first one”.

He made a statement to police three days later accusing Goodwin of performing oral sex on him five times in prison and smuggling him tobacco.

But since then he has fallen silent, the court heard.

Goodwin’s barrister Robert Webb told the court London had a case of the “green-eyed monster” and his evidence was “maliciously motivated”.

Magistrate Daniel Reiss accepted the relationship between the pair had “gone very sour”.

“Only days before him making a statement, he became aware of a media report she was having a relationship with another man,” Mr Reiss told the court.

Mr Reiss gave London a handful of chances to give verbal evidence on Wednesday morning in Burwood Local Court but London refused and was found to be in contempt.

He ruled London’s written police statement inadmissible, leaving the prosecution to consider whether they would drop charges.

Mr Reiss told the court London wanted “revenge” by constantly saying he was going to “burn” Goodwin.

“He repeats that expression many times...getting some revenge against her...he was angry and full of hatred,” Mr Reiss said.

The case was adjourned until July 1 for the prosecution to decide whether they would go ahead on the two smuggling charges.

Goodwin has pleaded not guilty to smuggling in contraband for London, which police allege included a packet of White Ox tobacco, two cigarette lighters and Extra chewing gum.

She will be sentenced for having an intimate relationship with London, but the evidence about the relationship being sexual has been ruled out.

Earlier in the day, Prosecutor Thomas George told the court it seemed someone had made London fear for his safety, telling the court he was recently hospitalised with a broken jaw in jail.

“All evidence would suggest he’s had his jaw broken at the behest of somebody who doesn’t want to see him give evidence against someone else...he is worried for his safety,” Mr George told the court.

On May 25, he told police: “I don’t know what he is going to do to me. I have a broken jaw. I’m not getting up in court. He’s going to make my life hell.”

A source told The Daily Telegraph SMRC has a high number of Rebels Outlaw Motorcycle inmates.

Magistrate Daniel Reiss accepted Valeri was an associate or had ties to the group, judging by his clothing with gang logos in pictures tendered to the court.

He found London to be in contempt of court and referred the case to the Supreme Court, which has higher penalties than the Local Court.

The Local Court could only add a further 28 days to an offender’s sentence for contempt, which Mr Reiss said was “not an adequate sentence” in this case.

The earliest date London could be released on his current prison sentence is August 6, 2022.
