Police investigate Hamzy-Alameddine war link in Granville shooting

A man has been arrested after a shooting in Western Sydney captured on CCTV and being investigated as linked to the Hamzy-Alameddine war.

Reports of multiple gunshots in Western Sydney

Police are investigating whether an Alameddine or Hamzy associate may have been the target of a drive-by shooting in Western Sydney on Thursday amid concerns tensions are escalating between the warring factions.

CCTV footage of the shooting shows a volley of bullets being fired at a ute by a passing car on Blaxcell St, Granville around 7.30pm on Thursday, before both vehicles are seen fleeing the scene.

Another car, a rental vehicle, was spotted by PolAir speeding away from South Granville minutes later, before it was later found 10km away at a home in Pemulway.

There, the 21-year-old male driver was arrested after he attempted to flee on foot before discarding a bag containing $30,000 cash, mobile phones and a knife.

Footage appears to show a person lean out of a car and fire a gun.

The Ingleburn man was taken to Granville Police Station and charged with not comply with health orders, possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, deal with property proceeds of crime and enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday, October 20.

Following the arrest, a further two men, aged 28 and 26 — who police say are Alameddine associates — were subsequently arrested and taken to Parramatta Police Station, where they were questioned before being released pending further inquiries.

While no one was injured in the ambush, police allege the attack was targeted and they are investigating whether the target may have been one the Alameddine or Hamzy clan.

“Inquiries are continuing into exactly who the target was … and whether they are associates of the Alameddines or Hamzys,” Detective Inspector Glenn Morfott said.

“We know they came from a particular address and we’re speaking with the people at that address.”

He said police are concerned those responsible are willing to unleash gunfire on a suburban street so early in the night.

“The fact they’re prepared to behave like this at 7.30 in a residential area causes us concern,” he said.

The shooting comes just one month after Shady Kanj, a low-level associate of the Alameddines was shot dead in Chester Hill on August 6.

Kanj, a low level associate of the Alameddine organised crime network, was sitting in a black Kia Rio on Boundary Ave in Chester Hill when it was peppered with bullets about 11.15pm.

He was shot several times, but the driver of his car managed to drive away.

The conflict escalated late last year when Shaylin Zreika, an ally of the Alameddines, was bashed in the street by people loyal to the Hamzys.

Since then, four murders, including Bilal Hamze and Mejid Hamzy, and several other drive-by shootings have been linked to the conflict.

In February, a stray bullet hit a window at Auburn Hospital and injured a nurse in a drive-by shooting aimed at the home of Hamze’s mother.
