A body has been pulled from Sydney Harbour after a man disappeared while swimming out to a yacht with friends over the long weekend.

Emergency services were called to Obelisk Beach off Chowder Bay Rd, Middle Head, around 5.10pm on Monday following reports a swimmer had not resurfaced.

Police were told a group of people were swimming out to a yacht anchored off the beach, when one of the swimmers disappeared underwater and had not been seen since.

Officers from the Marine Area Command attended and conducted a search with the assistance of PolAir, Marine Rescue and NSW Maritime.

Police divers conducted an underwater search, recovering the body of a 38-year-old man about 8.20pm.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
