Grieving broadcaster Deborah Knight has blasted “cruel” and “heartless” trolls who raised doubts about her mother-in-law Connie Dunbar’s death on Sunday.

Dunbar, who was fully vaccinated, tragically passed away at age 88 after contracting Covid-19 from a nurse at The Calvary Haydon retirement community in Canberra but online trolls claimed her death was a “hoax”.

“My husband has lost his dear Mum to Covid and some cruel heartless people are questioning if it’s a hoax or if she even had the virus as she was double vaccinated. Appalling,” Knight tweeted on Monday.

The 2GB host’s husband Lindsay and the couple’s three children Darcy, 11, Elsa, nine, and Audrey, five, are mourning the loss of their beloved grandmother, who moved to Australia from Scotland with her husband Bill when she was younger.

Knight said Dunbar, who had dementia, did not exhibit any symptoms before she died.

“She didn’t have any real symptoms, she didn’t have a temperature, she didn’t have trouble breathing but she just was asleep the entire time and couldn’t wake up and couldn’t beat it and she will be sadly missed,” she said on-air.

She urged people to get vaccinated while paying tribute to a “wonderful woman”.

“Behind every single death and every single number is a grieving family, much-loved people and their families miss them dearly,” she said.

“Covid is cruel and for anyone doubting how cruel it is or questioning whether Covid’s real, I can tell you it is all-too real and if you’re still hedging getting vaccinated, that very simple act with plenty of vaccine options, plenty of availability, it can stop more families like mine from grieving and mourning the loss of a much-loved family member like Connie Dunbar. So if not for yourself, do it for others.”

During an appearance on Ben Fordham’s breakfast show, Knight said her husband Lindsay is still coming to terms with his loss.

“He’s doing ok, he loved his mum dearly. Very close to his mum so the loss of anyone from any condition if whatever age is a tragedy and it hits people hard. Him and his sister Jenny are doing ok,” she said.

The funeral will be held at a later date due to Covid restrictions.

“The family is thinking they will wait a couple of weeks until the restrictions ease and we can actually gather together,” she said.
