Police appeal to find driver after woman shot in Condell Park

The man wanted over the shooting of a woman in western Sydney who may never walk again has been arrested hiding in a roof cavity overnight.

Kamal Eljamal, 33, was apprehended late Friday evening almost four weeks since police allege he shot a woman in Condell Park and dumped her out the front of Bankstown Hospital.

The woman, 37, is now paralysed, police said, after the bullet severed her spine and damaged internal organs.

Tactical Operations Unit officers raided a home on Doris St, Picnic Point overnight where Eljamal was found allegedly hiding in a roof cavity.

Police allege Eljamal is the man in CCTV footage in tights and a hoodie outside the hospital who drove her to the emergency room in a Mercedes on January 12 before fleeing the scene.

Police allege Eljamal shot the woman through the ceiling of a Simmat Ave home on the same day, but could not determine whether it was deliberate or accidental.

“This was a combined and collaborative effort … if additional people need to be charged they will be,” Bankstown Commander Superintendent Adam Johnson said.

“If you think you can commit serious crimes and get away with it, you cannot run, we will find you.

“We will find you and we will use all the combined resources we have. We will not give up.”

Almost a month on from the shooting detectives from the Bankstown Police Area Command renewed a public appeal to locate Eljamal this week, who they believed was still in western Sydney.

Police allege he is the man in this CCTV footage driving the woman to Bankstown Hospital on January 12.

The victim, police sources said, was not co-operating with police.

Strike Force Chelston was formed to locate Eljamal after the shooting and Bankstown Crime Manager Darren Sly told reporters this week what happened to the woman was “appalling”.

An arrest warrant was issued on Wednesday for Eljamal to face several charges including possession of ammo, a pistol and shooting causing grievous bodily harm.

Eljamal, who is being legally represented by high profile defence barrister Talal Krayem and solicitor Bashaar Elkheir, did not apply for bail at Parramatta court on Saturday and it was formally refused.
