Tarek, Omar Zahed gym shooting: 22-year-old granted bail amid concealment charge

The first arrest made in connection with the shooting of Comanchero bikies Tarek and Omar Zahed has revealed where the getaway cars were allegedly hidden – and how.

The War episode 1: Streets on Fire

A Queensland man’s photo ID was used to lease a western Sydney apartment where two getaway vehicles used in the shooting of Comanchero bikie heavyweight Tarek Zahed had been secretly stored, police allege in court documents.

Zahed, 41, and his brother Omar, 39, were set upon in a hail of bullets when they exited Bodyfit Gym in Auburn in a brazen hit that rocked Sydney’s gangland underworld in May 2022.

Zahed was shot 10 times and survived- taken to hospital where he received treatment and was later discharged – but younger sibling Omar died at the scene.

No arrests had been made in connection to the incident until Christmas Eve when police swooped on 22-year-old electrician Adam Ganaim at Sydney airport as he hopped off a flight from his new hometown of Brisbane.

Ganaim, who was charged with concealing a serious indictable offence, has not been charged with the shooting.

Ganaim is originally from Sydney but relocated north in October.

Police allege in court documents that his photo ID was used to lease an apartment on Denman Ave, Wiley Park, which detectives say was used to store two Audi Q7 SUVs that were later used as getaway vehicles in the Zahed shooting.

The two cars were found on fire in Berala and Greenacre shortly after the shooting.

Ganaim faced Parramatta Bail Court on Christmas Day.

In pushing for Ganaim to be released on bail, defence lawyer Hisham Karnib told the court that another person who was actually involved in the Wiley Park apartment’s lease was overseas.

Mr Karnib said in tapped conversations someone had said to Ganiam: “How the f**k did he use your ID?” to which Ganaim replied: “I used to do anything for the c**t”.

Magistrate Brian van Zuylen said Ganaim was not alleged to have been involved in Zahed’s actual murder.

But the magistrate said the tapped conversations appeared to suggest Ganiam knew his photo ID had been used in the leasing of the apartment.

“(There are) a great deal of recordings between him and people implicated in the whole enterprise,” Mr van Zuylen said.

“There have been ongoing investigations in the last seven and a half months … recording conversations … and his movements.

“There is no allegation that he was involved – at this stage – with the alleged murder.”

The court heard Ganiam was already on bail when he was arrested for domestic violence and weapon possession charges.

In granting him bail, Mr van Zuylen said Ganaim’s father, a taxi driver, must offer $10,000 up as surety.

Ganaim mouthed “I love you” to his parents, who were in court to support him, as he was granted bail.

He must live at their Granville home as part of his bail conditions.

Zahed, who was the Comanchero’s sergeant-at-arms, is himself behind bars on remand on murder and kidnapping charges.
