Pedestrian critically injured in Surry Hills crash, car destroyed by fire

A 33-year-old man has been hospitalised with a suspected broken skull after he was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing overnight. The car then crashed and caught alight.

A 33-year-old man has been critically injured after a car hit him at a pedestrian crossing before it crashed into a vehicle and caught fire.

Police said the driver left the scene after the incident in Surry Hills at 11.30pm Monday night.

Surry Hills police allege a blue Toyota Yaris hatchback had been travelling on Oxford Street when it turned onto Wentworth Ave and struck the man on a pedestrian crossing.

The vehicle then continued along Wentworth Ave before hitting a parked SUV and catching fire.

Police were told the driver then left the scene.

Officers arrived to find the injured man lying on the road with passers-by helping him.

He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with head injuries and treated for a suspected fractured skull. He is in a serious but stable condition.

The Toyota Yaris was destroyed by the blaze and the SUV damaged before Fire and Rescue NSW officers got it under control.

Wentworth Ave was closed overnight while officers from the Crash Investigation Unit inspected the scene. All roads have since reopened.
