Operation Amarok VIII: 548 people charged with 1283 offences during four-day domestic and family violence operation

More than 500 people have been charged with domestic violence offences during a four-day statewide police operation targeting domestic and family violence. Watch the video.

Over 500 charged in huge domestic violence operation

Hundreds of people have been charged with more than 1200 offences as part of a four-day statewide police operation targeting domestic and family violence.

It included a 33-year-old man who, 30 minutes before handing himself into police in Bathurst, allegedly broke into the home of a 29-year-old woman known to him, damaged her door and threatened her.

He was charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence – inflict actual bodily harm among three other domestic violence related offences.

In another incident a 51-year-old man was arrested in Tamworth with police alleging he assaulted a 47-year-old woman for two decades from 2004 and 2024 during their 21-year relationship.

He was charged with domestic violence related intentionally choke person without consent; assault; stalk or intimidate; destroy or damage property; and breaching an AVO.

Another man, 49, allegedly used a 1.5m weight bar, weighing 15kg, to smash a windscreen belonging to a woman known to him at a home in Bondi Rd, Bondi.

He was taken to Waverley police station and charged with destroy or damage property and contravening an AVO.

A 47-year-old man was arrested at a Surry Hills home and charged with three counts of contravening an AVO, and domestic violence related stalk or intimidate.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man in Cronulla over allegations a woman, known to him, was assaulted. He was charged with domestic violence related assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stalk or intimidate and three counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage.

A 39-year-old woman was arrested in Doonside with police alleging she grabbed a nine-year-old child around the throat and held him down on a bed. She was charged with domestic violence related common assault.

A 34-year-old man, wanted on outstanding warrants for alleged historic domestic violence offences, was extradited to NSW from Queensland where he was charged with three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm; and using a carriage service to threaten to kill.

In Summer Hill, Police seized 15 firearms, including 10 pistols, four rifles, a shotgun and a variety of knives. A 42-year-old man was charged with multiple firearm offences.

A 33-year-old was arrested in Kanahooka on the south coast. Police will allege they found a knife, electric stun device and identification documents which police claim were stolen.

He was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, destroy or damage property, stalk or intimidate and firearm offences.

Operation Amarok VIII ran from November 13 to 16 and involved police officers from across the state.

In addition to the 548 people charged and 1283 offences during the four-day operation, police visited more than 100 schools and 12 PCYC-led events to deliver presentations on respectful relationships and coercive control.

Police also conducted 138 Firearms Prohibition Order compliance searches with 64 firearms and 17 other weapons seized along with 10,434 apprehended domestic violence order checks. Officers detected about 455 breaches.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley said education was as important as enforcement.

“The NSW Police Force are on the frontline of domestic and family violence, often responding at the point of crisis,” she said.

“Operation Amarok is just one way police respond to this hideous crime and keep a check on high-risk individuals to help prevent future offending. It sends a strong message that these criminal actions are not tolerated.

“Enforcement is crucial but we must stop this offending before it happens which is why police are going into schools, supporting the next generation to understand healthy relationships and giving them the knowledge and tools to recognise and take action against this behaviour.”

Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said police will continue high-visibility operations to continue helping and protecting domestic violence victims.
