NSW Police are appealing to the public for information after human remains were discovered in a burnt-out car near the Royal National Park.
Shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning, emergency services crews were called to Waterfall Flat at Waterfall following reports of a car fire.
The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) attended the site and found a white Toyota RAV4 engulfed in flames about 9km south of Engadine.
After firefighters extinguished the blaze and inspected the interior, they found skeletal remains inside the vehicle and notified officers attached to Sutherland Police Area Command, who attended a short time later to set up a crime scene.
Specialist police attended the scene later on Tuesday to continue the investigation while the remains were sent for forensic examination to determine identification.
As investigations continue, Strike Force Krautz has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police are seeking assistance from members of the public who may have been at or around the Royal National Park or travelled along the Princes Highway between Engadine and Waterfall between 6pm and midnight on Monday.
Police are also urging anyone who may have dashcam footage or information in relation to a dark-coloured Toyota RAV4 is urged to call Sutherland police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
In a separate incident, a businessman’s body which was found in a burnt out car in Parramatta is being investigated as a possible murder, with police probing links between his death and his car dealership.
The body of the 56-year-old man was discovered in a burning Ford Fiesta on Webb St about 2.15am on Tuesday, as horrified locals rushed out after hearing what they said sounded like gunshots before finding the car on fire and the man’s body inside.
While Homicide detectives are assisting local detectives, they are not ruling out the possibility the businessman’s death was an accident or self harm. It may take days for his cause of death to be determined.
As police began the investigation into the man’s death, the discovery of a second man’s body in eerily similar circumstances to the burnt out car at Waterfall, is not believed to be linked.
