Toufik Hamze begged son Salim to quit Sydney’s underworld before Guildford double murder

Toufik Hamze’s begged his son Salim to quit Sydney’s underworld, but it fell on deaf ears. It ended with the duo being gunned down as they sat in a car in Sydney’s west last year.

New CCTV as police investigate Guildford double murder

The innocent father of a teen underworld figure pleaded with his son to leave Sydney’s underworld before they were both fatally shot in Sydney’s west last year.

Homicide Squad detectives have launched a public appeal for information with new CCTV footage in hopes of solving the double murder of father and son — Toufik, 64, and Salim Hamze, 18 — in Guildford exactly one year ago.

The duo was gunned down as they sat in a car outside their Osgood St family home just before 9am on October 20, 2021.

Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, said Toufik Hamze was an innocent bystander who had tried to steer his son away from Sydney’s gangland scene.

“(Their family) want justice for their loved ones. Toufik Hamze … is an innocent part in this,” Det Supt Doherty said.

“His son … may have committed some crime or been at least linked to organised crime (but) Toufik was doing his best to try (and) get him out of that (and) get him working in a construction area.”

Toufik and Salim were inside of a red utility work vehicle ready to head to work before they were fatally hit with bullets.

Salim died at the scene, while Toufik was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Westmead Hospital, where he later passed.

Police believe there is still valuable information in the public that could be useful to their investigation.

“I firmly believe that there are people out there that know exactly what's going on,” Dep Supt Doherty said.

“That wall is crumbling a little bit. We are getting information from people coming forward. We’ve already locked up one person and we’re hopeful we can lock up more.”

New CCTV footage of a black Toyota Camry – that was travelling in the vicinity of The Esplanade in Guildford an hour before the murder occurred – has since been released as police continue to investigate the double fatality.

They believe the Toyota with registration DC 84 DT may have been used in the crime – constituting the third vehicle of interest in their investigation.

Earlier inquiries subsequently led to the seizure of two cars – a grey Ford Mustang and a burnt-out Lexus SUV – believed to have been used as getaway vehicles in the murder.

They have since undergone forensic examination.

In July, detectives searched a home on Alton St in Merrylands where they arrested a 25-year-old man.

He was charged over his alleged role in the murder and remains before the courts.

The vehicle has never been recovered and police believe it may be stored in a secure location.

“Unlike the Lexus which contained cloned plates, police have identified that the Camry was fraudulently registered and was also used before and after the murders,” Det Supt Doherty said.

“These syndicates use garages and car spaces across the Sydney metropolitan area to store cars before and after they are used to facilitate serious crimes.

“What we’d ask is for members of the community who may have seen this car – perhaps in a unit, garage, secure parking, or quiet street – or who have information about its use, to come forward.

“Toufik Hamze died due to his son’s involvement in the criminal milieu, but neither the community or police will tolerate the slaughter of an innocent man and those responsible should know they are on borrowed time.”
