Human remains have been found in sand dunes on one of the state’s most popular North Coast beaches.

Just after 10am on Tuesday, a regeneration volunteer came upon bones at Jetty Beach at Coffs Harbour.

The bones were found just 10 metres from where people often picnic.

Police quickly cordoned off the immediate area and started sifting through the sand looking for more bone fragments.

Early indications are that the remains appear to have been there for some time without any flesh on them, or clothing found in the vicinity.

Strike Force Osbox has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
