Mohamad Omar freed on $2m bail after investigations into Mejid Hamzy murder

Mohamad Omar, arrested following investigations into the murder of Sydney gangland figure Mejid Hamzy, has been released.

Bassam Hamzy, the Brothers for Life gang leader's life of crime inside Goulburn Supermax prison.

A man arrested following investigations into the murder of Sydney gangland figure Mejid Hamzy has been freed on bail after a supporter agreed to cough up $2 million if he fails to comply with strict conditions once released.

Mohamad Omar, 44, faced Burwood Local Court on Thursday a week after being charged by police with multiple offences including dealing with the property proceeds of crime.

The drive-by shooting of Hamzy, also 44, last October is believed to have sparked a major escalation in hostilities between two crime families in the city’s southwest, the Hamzys and the Alameddines.

Police allege Omar helped to conceal a BMW after Hamzy was gunned down outside his Condell Park home on a Monday morning.

It is alleged the BMW was caught on CCTV vision travelling from Moorebank to Condell Park — on the night Hamzy was shot — before travelling on to Luddenham.

Court records state that a supporter of Omar’s agreed to forfeit a hefty $2 million if he fails to comply with his bail conditions.

Omar will next appear in Burwood Local Court on September 8.

His younger brother, Ezzedine Omar, 38, was charged with 17 offences over Hamzy’s death including murder.

Police allege Ezzedine Omar, who remains behind bars on remand, was a known associate of the Alameddine crime network and that he had been paid to orchestrate and carry out Hamzy’s killing.

It’s not alleged either of the Omar brothers pulled the trigger.

However, NSW Police Detective Acting Superintendent said those who did “could expect a knock on the door sooner rather than later”.

Mejid Hamzy was the brother of notorious gang leader Bassam Hamzy, who is behind bars for murder at Goulburn Supermax Jail.
