A man who was found dead by “shocked” neighbours in a Sydney apartment complex carpark has been identified, with another man assisting police with inquiries.
The man was found dead in a carpark on Sydney’s Northern Beaches on Monday morning, with police treating the discovery as “suspicious”.
NSW Police and emergency service crews were called to Ilikai Place in Dee Why just after 7am, following reports of a body which had been found in the unit complex carpark.
Officers rushed to the site and found the local man’s body.
About 12.30pm a man, 37, was arrested at a unit at the complex, after riot squad officers were heard banging down a door.
The man, who was wearing a green hoodie, was walked to a police car, escorted to Manly Police Station and is assisting police with inquiries.
Neighbours described seeing a black hatchback approaching the property multiple times before 5am on Monday morning.
The dead man is yet to be formally identified.
Multiple tactical police units, riot squad officers and ambulance paramedics remained at the property on Monday, travelling in and out of the back entrance.
It is understood the man’s body is still inside the apartment complex car park.
Neighbour Janine said she was “really shocked” after leaving her home on Monday morning to discover the body.
“I came down stairs and came across this huge police operation,” she said. “It’s very sad. I couldn’t believe it.
The local woman said she “felt sorry for everyone involved”.
“I wasn’t scared. I just felt more of a feeling of sadness that someone lost their life,” she said.
Other neighbours indicated police had visited the unit complex before the incident on Monday morning.
Acting Superintendent Traci Watt confirmed there were no obvious signs of injury or violence.
“We will be waiting on the results of the autopsy to understand how this gentleman has died,” she said on Monday afternoon.
While some neighbours had told media they saw a body being carried into the car park on Monday morning, police could not confirm this.
“That’s part of our ongoing investigation into the matter,” Supt Watt said.
Ms Watt confirmed the 37-year-old assisting and cooperating with investigators was previously known to police.
She said the two men were known to each other, and there were no weapons found by police in their search of the car park and unit complex.
