A manhunt is underway after a violent carjacking and subsequent crash in Sydney’s southwest on Tuesday morning.
Police said a 48-year-old Uber driver, from Minto, was at Jim’s car wash on Atchison Rd in Macquarie Fields about 3.30am, after finishing his shift.
He was allegedly approached by two men dressed in all black with their faces covered, both armed with a knife, who threatened him.
One male jumped in the man’s grey Toyota Camry and drove it away, while the second male hopped into the car soon afterwards.
Police said a third man also followed alongside the stolen car riding a scooter.
The distressed, but uninjured, Uber driver walked to Macquarie Fields police station to report the incident.
Police circulated a description of the car and about an hour after it was stolen emergency services received a triple-0 call from a woman involved in a head-on collision with the car on Copperfield Dr, Ambarvale.
She suffered minor chest injuries from airbags being deployed in the crash.
She reported that two men fled the scene of the crash on foot and a third rode off on a scooter.
Later on Tuesday, Campbelltown police Acting Superintendent Dean Johnstone said detectives were looking for three males — most likely teenagers — who ranged in height from 150cm to 155cm, with skinny builds.
One of the males who allegedly rode in the stolen car was described as caucasian and wearing a black hoodie, black pants and black face mask.
Police said the other male in the car described as Pacific Islander in appearance and wearing all black and a face mask.
Acting Superintendent Dean Johnstone called the alleged armed carjacking “extremely brazen”.
“To … threaten a man and to then take his vehicle, a vehicle the man actually uses for his livelihood … and was simply just washing his car at the end of his shift,” Mr Johnstone said.
He said investigations are ongoing with the stolen car currently undergoing forensic examination.
Police are appealing for any information from the community, and for anyone with dashcam footage in between Macquarie Fields and Ambarvale around the time of the incident to get in contact with crime stoppers on 1800 333 000
