New burnt out car found after ‘bikie figure’ shot in Kirribilli

A one-time high-ranking bikie member was holed up in a luxury harbourside apartment refusing to help police with their investigations on Wednesday night, after being ambushed on the street outside and shot in the ankle.

A second getaway car has been found burnt out more than 12 hours after the shooting of senior underworld figure Abdul Baghdadi, just blocks away from the Prime Minister’s residence.

An orange Holden Commodore was found alight on Harris St in Harris Park, in the city’s west, early on Thursday - the morning after the broad daylight shooting at Kirribilli on Sydney’s lower north shore.

Just minutes after Baghdadi was shot in the leg a white Ford Raptor - which was seen speeding away from the scene of the shooting - was found ablaze in the underground carpark of an apartment block in nearby Neutral Bay, with police treating all three crime scenes as being linked.

The Daily Telegraph understands Baghdadi, aged in his 30s, was lured to the street just after 4pm, where an unknown gunman fired five shots before fleeing.

Abdul Baghdadi was recently released from jail.

Distressed neighbours called Triple-0 after hearing gunshots and a man screaming out in pain.

“He was like wailing … and saying a few four letter words,” one witness said.

Police said the injured man declined to be treated by paramedics. His injury was not considered life-threatening.

Witnesses said the bloodied man took himself back inside the Upper Pitt St unit block, where friends arrived soon after to help him.

“You could see blood on his leg and the cops were all looking at blood on the ground,” the witness said.

Nearby private school students leaving St Aloysius College for the day were ushered away from the crime scene and escorted through road blocks which had been set up by police.

Senior police sources said the injured man had declined to speak with detectives last night.

“A crime scene was established and an investigation into the incident is underway,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Footage, obtained from Mosman Collective, shows a car well alight inside a garage, with smoke billowing out.

Police were probing if the ute had been used as a getaway car in Mr Baghdadi’s attack.

“Aren’t getaway cars usually just dumped in the street,” one man asked.

A resident in the Raymond Rd unit block where the fire broke out said she saw someone running shortly before the fire.

“The timing is a bit suspicious … but I’m hoping it’s all a really big coincidence,” she said.

Mr Baghdadi is understood to have only recently been released from prison.

While he has been reported to be a Bandido in the past, underworld figures say he is not a patched member but is closely associated with the gang.
In 2009, while serving time for armed robbery, Mr Baghdadi was set upon and brutally attacked when a jail gang war erupted inside Parklea prison.

Members of Notorious outlaw motorcycle gang set upon him during morning muster, attacking him with weapons included sharpened toothbrushes.

Five prison guards were injured when they attempted to break up the bloody brawl which at the height of the bloodshed, involved up to 60 inmates.
