A teenager has died, and two others were hospitalised, after their car slammed into a power pole following a police pursuit in Sutherland this morning.

At about 4:15am on Monday morning, police attempted to chase down a silver sedan carrying two passengers on Rawson Ave in Sutherland after police allege the driver failed to stop at an RBT.

Police flew after the sedan before deciding to call off the pursuit only seconds later due to the manner of driving.

A short time after, the silver car veered into a large wooden power pole, becoming swallowed by a large tree and roadside shrubbery.

Police pulled all occupants from the car to receive critical treatment by paramedics who quickly arrived on scene.

At the time, police reported that a 20-year-old passenger was killed in the incident, but it was later confirmed that it was a 17-year-old boy who died.

The driver of the car and another passenger were taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition, with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Photographs captured at the scene show the front passenger’s seat of the silver sedan wrapped around the power pole.

The vehicle hit the obstacle with such force that the front passenger’s door was wedged open, crushing the left side of the car on impact.

The bonnet was bent, exposing the insides of the engine.

Police officers were seen covering what is suspected to be the 17-year-old’s body on the side of the road in a black, plastic sheet as they worked to gather evidence.

A critical incident investigation has been launched and police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

No charges have been laid.
