A man was outside on a balcony while in a high-rise unit with two others before he lost his balance and accidentally plunged 15 floors to his death in Sydney’s east at the weekend.

Detectives have obtained statements from the two other people about their night together with the man, who slipped and fell from the harbourside apartment building on Thornton St in ritzy Darling Point about 9.30pm on Saturday.

Police are treating the death of the man, who was in his 30s, as a misadventure and not as suspicious.

They said no party was being held inside his unit at the time he fell and they are investigating whether he was simply “mucking around” when he fell.

Police and paramedics attended the scene, but there was nothing they could do to save him and he was declared dead on a road below the balcony.

They put a bedsheet over his body before it was taken away.

Blood could also be seen on the road.

Police will now prepare a report for the coroner, which will draw on the statements from the two witnesses.

Those two people who were in the unit at the time of the fall were comforted by emergency crews as they came to grips with what had happened.

In an unrelated incident, mum of two Jodie Lovell, 45, plunged 10 floors to her death at the Hyatt Regency hotel in the CBD in May 2020.

Her then partner, Scott Andrew Minigle, 52, has been accused by police of locking her out on a balcony after they had an argument over messages on her phone.

He is not charged in relation to her death.

Police charged him with a domestic violence offence of detaining a person with an intent to obtain an advantage. He remains before the courts and he denies any wrongdoing.
