An elderly man has been charged with sending a series of offensive emails to NSW state MP Alex Greenwich.
Police have confirmed a 69-year-old man will face court next week after Surry Hills Police Area Command detectives began investigating claims Mr Greenwich had received “six offensive emails” on Monday.
“Following inquiries, on Tuesday, police arrested a 69-year-old man at Dee Why police station,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
“He was taken to Manly police station where he was charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.”
The man was granted conditional bail and will face Manly Local Court for the first time next Tuesday.
“The victim has been updated on the progress of the investigation,” the spokeswoman concluded.
Police have also taken out a preliminary apprehended violence order for Mr Greenwich’s protection, which will be mentioned on the same day at Manly Local Court.
The man has separately made an application against NSW Police for the “return of seized things”, which will also be heard in court that day.
In an unrelated case, a 71-year-old retiree who sent threatening and homophobic hate mail to Mr Greenwich was convicted and sentenced to a two-year community corrections order in July 2024.
At the time, Michael Deane’s lawyer described her client’s conduct in sending Mr Greenwich letters including homophobic slurs and a reference to AIDS as “trolling” – which was roundly rejected by Magistrate Brett Shields at Downing Centre Local Court.
“The conduct is utterly reprehensible,” Mr Shields said at the time.
Deane’s letter was later referenced in Mr Greenwich’s successful defamation suit against fellow NSW MP Mark Latham regarding a homophobic tweet crudely describing a gay sex act.
Mr Greenwich’s counsel told the Federal Court Latham’s tweet had resulted in him being inundated with homophobic abuse.
The independent MP has represented the state seat of Sydney since 2012 after replacing now-Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
